Your Animal Portraits Can Feel More Alive Than
You Think.
Hey, I'm Shannon!
Hey, I’m Shannon, a pet portrait and wildlife artist from Lancashire, UK. I’ve loved animals and drawing for as long as I can remember, and I first began teaching myself with art books gifted to me by my Grandad.
Over the years, coloured pencil became the perfect way for me to bring those two loves together. My work is all about capturing soft texture, realistic detail, rich colour, and the quiet personality of each animal.
Inside Wildlife in Colour, I’ll guide you through the same step by step process I use in my own animal portraits. You’ll learn how to choose your materials, understand your reference, build gentle layers, create lifelike fur and feathers, and add the small finishing details that make your portrait feel polished, expressive, and full of life.
This course is designed to feel calm, clear, and beginner friendly, so you can build confidence with every pencil layer and create wildlife artwork you feel truly proud of.

Set Up Your Tools & Build Your Drawing Foundations
We’ll begin gently with a warm welcome to the course, then get you set up with the materials, papers, tools, lighting, posture, pencil grip, and pressure control you’ll need for coloured pencil animal portraits.
From there, we’ll move into the foundations of realistic drawing. You’ll learn how to choose a strong animal reference, break the face down into simple shapes, understand values, select colours, and start building smooth layers and gradients.
By the end of these first modules, you’ll have a clear starting process and the confidence to begin your wildlife portraits with more control, structure, and calmness from the very first layer.
Module 3 & 4
Understand Animal Textures & Begin Your First Study
In Module 3, we’ll focus on the details that make animal portraits feel realistic, starting with sketching, direction, and texture. You’ll learn how to create or transfer your drawing, understand fur and feather direction, and approach different textures like white fur, black fur, eyes, noses, and small facial details.
Then in Module 4, you’ll begin your first full wildlife study: a cockatoo portrait. I will guide you step by step through the eye, beak, soft white feathers, yellow crest, and final details, so you can see how the foundations come together in a real coloured pencil portrait.
By the end, you’ll understand how to read texture, follow direction, and start building an animal portrait with more confidence, patience, and control.
Module 5 & 6
Build Fur, Feathers & Expression With Two Wildlife Portraits
In Module 5, we’ll move into your lion portrait, where you’ll learn how to build realistic animal features with coloured pencil. I will guide you through the eyes, nose, muzzle, short fur, mane sections, and final touches, so you can understand how to create depth, warmth, and expression in a powerful wildlife subject.
Module 7 & 8
Complete Your Otter Portrait & Build Your Own Process
In Module 7, we’ll move into your otter portrait, where you’ll learn how to approach warm neutral tones, soft base layers, wet fur texture, expressive eyes, the nose, muzzle, whiskers, and delicate ceramic knife highlights. I will guide you step by step so you can understand how to create texture that feels soft, natural, and full of life.
Then in Module 8, we’ll bring everything together and help you feel more confident drawing beyond the course studies. You’ll learn how to approach any animal reference, choose colours with more clarity, simplify what to include, and build a repeatable process you can use in your own wildlife portraits.
By the end of these modules, you’ll feel more prepared to keep creating on your own, with a clearer process, stronger coloured pencil skills, and the confidence to bring future animal portraits to life.
